campaign to establish a college of university rank in
Bangor was the voluntary contributions made by local
quarrymen from their weekly wages over a period of

become as well-known and respected in engineering
circles as was the name of Isambard Kingdom Brunel a
hundred years ago. Both reputations are well deserved,
reflecting outstanding technical competence, creativity
and commitment which have resulted in important advances
in science and knowledge benefiting the lives of
countless people.
However, today, Brunel University's
influence extends far beyond the fields of engineering,
science and technology, which were its traditional
strengths. A long succession of developments and mergers
has brought the University from modest beginnings to a
major force on the UK higher education scene.
Brunel has always prided itself on
the relevance of its academic work. We place great value
on our pure investigative research but we have always
valued too the usefulness of our research to the

Queen
Mary University Of London:
Queen Mary has its roots in four
colleges: Queen Mary College, Westfield College, St
Bartholomew's Hospital Medical College and the London
Hospital Medical College. The oldest building on campus
is the Queens' Building built in 1887; originally known
as The People's Palace, it provided entertainment and
cultural opportunities for the local population. It was
admitted to the University of London in 1915.
The College and its academic
departments, library, Students' Union and administrative
buildings are all on one campus. This makes the College
unique amongst the University of London's central
colleges. Having all academic departments together has
advantages in terms of scale of centralised facilities,
as well as improving communication and giving the
College a strong sense of identity. Many students
following combined-subject courses across two or more
departments have found the closeness of academic
departments particularly helpful, as it saves time and
allows them greater choice of timetable combinations.
The College has approximately 9,000 students, including
over 1,600 students following postgraduate and research
programmes. As a result of a merger in 1995 Queen Mary
incorporates two medical Colleges: St Bartholomew's and
the Royal London. These are situated west of the
College, Barts near St Paul's and the Royal London in
Whitechapel.
The campus buildings range in style
from the Victorian splendour of the Queens' Building,
set back from its clock tower and lawn, to newer
buildings including the Faculty of Arts Building,
Library and Halls of Residences overlooking Regent's
Canal. The campus continues to develop with a new
Chemistry building and further on campus accommodation
blocks planned.
A recent refurbishment of the
Students' Union has enhanced its reputation as one of
the best-equipped and most active unions in London. The

country's biggest and most dynamic universities, with
more than 24,000 students and over 3,000 staff. It has
an impressive record for graduate employment, since most
of its 650 courses are designed in partnership with
business, industry and the professions.
Year after year, league tables in
the British press place Sheffield Hallam among the
leading modern universities. Our research, too, is
highly rated -2001's official assessment (the Research
Assessment Exercise) placed us joint top among modern
universities. Sheffield Hallam was ranked as the top
English university in the Times Higher Education
Supplement's 2002 'Access Elite' league table, which
combined measures for widening access, low drop out
rates and teaching and research excellence
Our e-learning system is one of the
most extensive and among the most advanced, at any
university in the country. It doesn't try to replace
face-to-face teaching and learning, but it does open up
a rich resource for both teachers and students.
Among the latest developments at
the University are the impressive new science
laboratories for the School of Science and Mathematics,
including one equipped for advanced biotechnology
research. New superbly equipped fitness facilities for
the use of students, staff and local communities opened
in 2002. Plans for further development of two of our
campuses into the 21st century are also already well
advanced.
It's not only the university
environment that's popular with students and employees -
our home city is a big attraction too. England's
fourth-largest city, Sheffield is changing fast. Since
the 1980s it has emerged as a national centre for sport
and leisure and for high-tech manufacturing, creative
and service industries. In addition, we are eagerly
anticipating the arrival of the transformed city centre,
featuring the Winter Gardens development. A
comparatively low cost of living, combined with all the
attractions and amenities of a big city, gives Sheffield
the edge over many other university locations.
Excellence, employability and
enterprise are recurrent themes in Sheffield Hallam

we moved in the 1970’s to new purpose-built facilities
in Tooting south-west London (a simple and quick
tube-ride to the centre of the Capital). This was to
enable us to provide effectively for the many people who
live in the south-west sector of London and to provide a
strong "clinical base" for our teaching and research.
The School’s mission is to promote
by excellence in teaching, clinical practice and
research the prevention, treatment and understanding of
disease. In doing so we make special use of our
opportunities to work closely with the National Health
Service and of the interdisciplinary opportunities that
we have. Scientists and medical students, doctors,

Students benefit from being taught
in a research environment where staff share expertise
and specialist facilities. We set high standards for
teaching quality and provide professional training
opportunities for all our lecturers.
Extensive student support services
include our new Disability and Dyslexia Centre which
works with over 700 students. Many of our black and
other ethnic minority students participate in our
pioneering mentoring scheme which pairs them with
highfliers in the City and elsewhere. Offers lots of
additional resource links for students to thousands of
alternative jobs, work, career, recruitment and
employment advice.
