Crossrail agrees station improvement construction jobs

13/10/2010

An agreement has been signed that will enable public spaces outside stations on the new Crossrail network to be improved, potentially creating new civil engineering jobs. The memorandum of understanding has been signed by Crossrail and local authorities in London, Buckinghamshire, Berkshire and Essex, as well as by Transport for London, the London Development Agency, Network Rail and the Department for Transport. It will enable Crossrail's urban design team to plan construction work designed to create new and improved public spaces around Crossrail stations that also integrate with their existing transport services.

Graham King from Westminster City Council, which is one of the participating local authorities, asserted: "This joint commitment between Crossrail and local authorities seeks to ensure that areas around all Crossrail stations will not only be fully accessible and reflect local needs, but also aim to stimulate further local regeneration."

Crossrail is anticipated to have a huge impact on construction recruitment over the next few years, with around 14,000 people expected to be employed during the peak of its development; while a further 7,000 jobs will also be created indirectly.
