High demand for construction and engineering staff

05/08/2010

Workers in the construction and engineering industry are in the highest demand according to a survey by the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) and KPMG.

The results come as a positive for construction recruitment with workers in building jobs and civil engineering jobs in demand by firms across the UK. The 'Report on Jobs' shows that overall, temporary and permanent staff recruitment has fallen to a nine month low. However, construction and engineering has surprised analysts by topping the league of biggest recruiters by sector.

Despite starting salaries growing year on year, some employers in the engineering and technical sectors were crying out for specialist skills, even despite nearly 2.5m people being out of work.

Since the recession employers are finding it increasingly difficult to find experienced and qualified staff. Taking into consideration the lack of school leavers pursuing trade qualifications and the extended retirement age, we will soon see that the limited number of technically-qualified workers will be few and far between giving them the edge over other workers as they compete for higher salaries.
