Manchester tops London in desirability poll
10/06/2009
Manchester is one of the world's top 50 most liveable cities and was rated ahead of London, New York, Rome, Milan and Singapore.
According to the Economist Intelligence Unit's global liveability survey, Manchester was rated 46th and London 51st.
Local investment agency Midas is delighted and said the rating was thanks to its hard work and the efforts of partner agencies such as Marketing Manchester.
Midas chief executive Colin Sinclair noted that the ranking "confirms Manchester's burgeoning status on the national and international stage".
While performing well in this assessment, London is struggling with industrial action, which has brought its underground services to a halt.
Today's strike by London underground workers and increased traffic on the roads led to a gridlock situation where vehicles could not move.
The transport commissioner has said conditions are good on the Northern Line and "decent" on the Jubilee line.
