Manchester boosts construction jobs
04/06/2009
Construction jobs in Manchester look set to become more widely available in the coming years following a major investment form the city's council.
Manchester city council has unveiled a new £700 million package of measures that will provide a range of new construction careers over the next three years, focusing on the development of new public buildings.
The council believes the move will help create 8,000 construction jobs in the region, with 6,500 skilled workers such as supervisors, bricklayers, carpenters and plumbers all needed for the programme of work.
Among the construction jobs being prepared by the council are new buildings and the refurbishment and maintenance of schools, libraries, leisure facilities and housing.
"These works add up to a huge programme of investment in facilities that will benefit Manchester residents for years to come and of which they can be proud," said councillor Sue Murphy, executive member for employment and skills at the council.
"Our commitment to these improvements to the built environment is also sustaining vital jobs during a period of recession," she added.
Earlier this year, the Manchester Independent Economic Review said that the city is well-placed to come out of the recession in a strong position, provided it invests in the development of employees' skills.
