Extension of planning permission 'would protect jobs'
26/02/2009
The government has been urged to take action in order to protection jobs in construction.
According to the Confederation of British Industry (CBI), planning permission should that is due to expire should be allowed to be extended.
Permission currently tends to be given with a three-year limit, but the body noted that the recession has caused many firms to postpone projects.
With fees to submit applications proving costly, director for business environment at the CBI Neil Bentley called for ministers to allow flexibility.
"Allowing firms to apply for a time extension on planning permission would help them survive the recession, protect jobs and leave them better-positioned to take advantage of the economic recovery," he remarked.
This week the 2020 Group called for the government to invest in creating 100,000 new homes over the next two years - in order to provide accommodation as well as boost the economy by saving construction jobs.
