Training for construction jobs gets green light
09/04/2009
The government has announced that 57 new consortiums will teach the Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment C&BE.
The qualification is now accessible by almost 80 per cent of young people, giving those students looking for construction jobs plenty of providers to choose from.
Once they have their courses running, the new consortium's, which include employers, schools, colleges and training providers, will help increase the amount of suitably trained young people in the workforce.
"We anticipate that working with the diploma in C&BE will ultimately provide us with well-rounded new recruits who have the right mix of general employment skills and broad sector knowledge," Chris Simpson, education officer at construction group Wates, told industry publication, Building.
Major employers of construction jobs such as Balfour Beatty, Kier Group and Bovis Lend Lease are all signed up to the scheme.
Students that are successful in their studies could find themselves working on the preparations for the London Olympics.
The regeneration of parts of London ahead of the games has already brought several new jobs to a sector hit by falling property prices.
