Pressure on the construction industry eases, study finds Pressure on the construction industry has lessened, according to the latest CIPS/Markit UK Construction Purchasing Managers' Index.

The current contraction in the industry has now slowed to its lowest level for eight months, although more jobs could be threatened, the study warned.

Roy Ayliffe, director at the Chartered Institute of Purchasing & Supply (CIPS), said confidence in future sector performance has improved and mothballed contracts were expected to restart.

"Although April saw some reprieve for the UK manufacturing sector, we are still far away from a turn-around and the industry is firmly embedded in the trenches of the recession," he noted.

The Scottish construction recruiter Vanguard told Recruiter it was seeing some positive signs - the firm's managing director Brian Smith said several of the major house builders have even increased the number of staff they have on site.ADNFCR-1196-ID-19153729-ADNFCR
