Construction workers 'unbeaten by cold, flu'

06/12/2007

Men who work in construction and manual labour jobs are more likely to work through a cold or flu than workers in other sectors, new research reveals.

A new survey conducted by Beechams found that almost three quarters of men who work in construction jobs will continue to work while suffering from cold and flu symptoms, with 72 per cent of workers with a cold in the last year struggling on.

When asked why they carried on as normal without taking some time off to recover, 39 per cent of manufacturing and manual labour workers claimed that they "refused to let illness beat them".

Overall, two thirds of men will go into work with a cold, compared to just half of women

The results showed that women living in Brighton and Nottingham, working in the travel industry account for the category most likely to call in sick, with only 21 per cent saying they would turn up for a days work when ill.ADNFCR-1196-ID-18384526-ADNFCR
