Cost of staff sickness to construction sector up 200%
18/12/2007
The ill health of workers cost the construction industry almost £104,000 this year, according to Bupa's website costofabsence.com.
Statistics taken from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development show that the cost of workers taking time off due to illness to the construction sector rose by over 200 per cent from £49,200 in 2006 to £103,600 in 2007 per business.
Ann Greenwood, director of business markets for BUPA UK Health Insurance, said: "Businesses need to understand the impact that sickness absence can have on them, in terms of their performance, productivity and efficiency, as well as the effect it will have on their employees."
She added: "Although it's not a cure, private health cover can help employees get prompt access to diagnosis and expert medical care when and where they need it, as well as get appointments at a convenient time to fit in with work commitments."
Recent reports revealed that British businesses are losing £1,000 annually per employee due to mental illness among staff.
