11/01/2008

The University of Wolverhampton is set to launch a new degree course for people working in the construction sector.

Due to start in February, the School of Engineering and the Built Environment has developed a two-year Foundation Degree in Construction for workers currently in the industry.

The structure of the programme will allow students to combine their work with study that will provide them with essential industry skills such as health and safety, construction technology and environmental impact.

Professor David Proverbs, head of the Construction Department at the University, said: "The new Foundation Degree in Construction provides the opportunity for experienced construction workers, perhaps with no formal qualifications, to gain a vocational degree that recognises and values their experience.

"With work-based learning being a major feature, this new type of degree course develops the knowledge and skills needed by employers."

According to the Health and Safety Executive, approximately 2.2 million people work in the UK construction industry.ADNFCR-1196-ID-18423366-ADNFCR
