Construction union calls for employer flexibility over Easter
22/01/2008
The Union of Construction, Allied Trades and Technicians (UCATT) has called for the implementation of flexible working arrangements for construction workers this Easter.
Due to the earlier date on which Easter falls this year, the normal school holiday period will not coincide with Easter bank holidays, posing problems for construction staff with children.
Alan Ritchie, general secretary of construction union UCATT and the secretary of the operative side of the Construction Industry Joint Council (CIJC), said: "I urge construction bosses to show good sense on this matter. Construction workers with families often have great difficulty in arranging childcare during school holidays.
"If their normal Easter holiday does not coincide with when their children are not at school, this will cause additional problems and could affect their performance at work."
Gerry Lean, employer's secretary of the CIJC, added that flexibility on this matter would benefit both the company and its workforce.
