LSC adds funding to construction skills project
30/01/2008
Given the current skills shortage in the construction industry, the Learning and Skills Council London central has backed a new scheme designed to encourage young people into construction careers.
Launched by housing agent Hyde Northside and its repair partner Caxton Islington, the project aims to teach young Islington residents core construction and building skills to meet the growing demand for skilled workers in the sector.
Young women interested in pursuing a career in construction are particularly encouraged to participate in the training scheme as employers recognise the under-representation of women in the industry.
Jane Nelson, managing director of Caxton Islington, told the Construction Times: "The industry is suffering from a lack of skilled workers, so by training and motivating young people such as those in the First Start scheme, we are offering them a positive career direction."
Paul Casey, senior skills and workforce development adviser from the Learning and Skills Council London central, added: "Not only does the scheme provide practical, measurable training, but each participant is motivated by developing team working skills and an insight into the construction industry."
