Builders go green

08/02/2008

Having understood the need to use sustainable materials, builders are now looking to add eco-roofs onto their developments, according to Contract Journal.

Local councils are keen to see them featured on new schools, hospitals and commercial developments.

"This year, there is likely to be a greater emphasis on resource demand in product manufacture, contributing to the 'carbon footprint' of a development, as well as the environmental impact of the project as a whole," the publication has claimed.

Green roofs can provide considerable savings as they have excellent insulation qualities and they can be made from materials often reclaimed from the development.

Brad Bamfield, managing director of management consultancy, the Solution Organisation explained: "Green roofs can be made from completely recycled material, don't cost much to do - in some cases nothing - and can save a considerable amount of energy."

Expert advice should be sought before going ahead with eco-builds, as roofs made from plants can influence insurance policies for remaining structures.
