Eco-town construction begins
12/02/2008
A new initiative has begun to build the world's first carbon-free, zero-waste city.
Masdar, in Abu Dhabi will set the example for renewable and sustainable construction methods and create an estimated 70,000 jobs.
The city will get its energy from solar power and utilise water and waste conservation and renewable energy and green construction methods.
Chief executive officer of Masdar Initiative, Sultan al-Jaber said: "We are creating a city where residents and commuters will live the highest quality of life with the lowest environmental footprint."
It has been estimated the new renewable methods would save the equivalent of $2 billion of oil over the next 25 years.
"By taking sustainable development and living to a new level, it will lead the world in understanding how all future cities should be built," he added.
Currently, UK energy is drawn from a mixture of sources as renewable initiatives alone fail to provide sufficient power.
