South-east needs eco-towns

07/03/2008

The south-east of England needs eco-towns to fight climate change and reduce a shortage of accommodation, a planning association has claimed.

Gideon Amos, chief executive of the Town and Country Planning Association (TCPA) explained that the region suffered from a "crisis of affordability" and "unparalleled regional factors".

"The number of households we are forming as a society is growing more than ever before. Our priority must be to ensure that eco-towns deliver on their promise of providing truly sustainable communities," he said.

Mr Amos went on to warn that climate change scientists have predicted warmer winters, hotter summers and water shortages.

"Water supply and quality is a particularly pertinent issue to the south-east," he commented.

"Eco-towns represent the first serious opportunity for development that does not harm the planet through CO2 and related emissions."
