Govt builds new strategy for clean construction industry

11/06/2008

The government has announced a joint initiative with the construction industry aimed at making the sector more sustainable.

Its Strategy for Sustainable Construction hopes to recruit an additional 230,000 trained workers for construction jobs by 2010, reduce the number of work-related deaths by ten per cent and cut construction waste to landfill by half.

"Our aim is to become a world leader in sustainable construction," said business minister, Shriti Vader.

"An efficient construction sector is essential for the investment in infrastructure and buildings that underpin our competitiveness."

New targets launched with the scheme hope to guide the industry to ensure 25 per cent of materials used in construction projects are responsibly sourced by 2012 and conduct biodiversity surveys on builds over £1 million.

The house-building sector has suffered from falling property prices. Bigger companies, such as Taylor Wimpey and Persimmon have seen their share prices fall.
