Govt launches skills shortage initiative
25/06/2008
The government has launched an initiative to tackle skill shortages in hospitality, process and construction jobs.
It announced it would earmark more than £300 million from its training budget to tackle current and future shortages.
"Industries such as construction, hospitality and processing are key to our future prosperity," said secretary of state for innovation, universities and skills, John Denham.
"The success of our country will depend on doing even more to increase people's skills and their ability to gain jobs in growing and successful industries, such as these."
The Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills will provide £133 million to help construction, £112 million for hospitality and £62 million for processing and manufacturing skill development.
Latest Department of Work and Pensions figures have revealed vacancies remained high and redundancies low, with 678,000 jobs unfilled in the three months to May.
