Women apprentices taking on new roles

11/07/2008

Female apprentices are taking on roles in sectors often considered to be dominated by men.

According to the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills, women are under-represented in construction jobs and engineering, but are excelling in apprenticeship schemes.

Skills secretary, John Denham, congratulated the finalists and winners of this year's Apprenticeships awards, saying: "I want to see far more young people choose apprenticeships as a great way to embark on a fulfilling career."

He congratulated the seven female finalists saying, in the past decade "we have more than doubled the number of young people and adults starting apprenticeships".

Three of this year's female finalists had taken on training for work in the male-dominated fields of aerospace engineering, engineering and electrical installation.

Government figures illustrate there are also roles men are rarely employed in – last year only three per cent of childcare, learning and development apprentices were male.
