Govt pledges 6bn for roads
16/07/2008
The government has said it is to invest £6 billion in UK's roads.
The money will go to improve motorways and other key roads in a move, which it hopes will get the most out of the country's current infrastructure.
Ruth Kelly, transport secretary, said the money "will allow us to develop and implement more innovative approaches to the way we use our major roads".
Currently, the network is blighted by congestion, she noted. Ms Kelly went on to say some roads could be widened and the hard shoulder opened to traffic at busy times.
"Where we add new capacity through measures like this I am also interested to see what role car share or tolled lanes could play in helping traffic flow more smoothly - giving motorists a choice about how they make their journeys."
Construction workers often have transferable practical skills, which help them find employment in building, road working and construction jobs.
