Major projects have saved construction jobs
04/08/2008
Large-scale housing projects have saved thousands of construction jobs, the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development has claimed.
It said despite a general downturn in demand for housing, certain schemes have helped keep workers in employment.
"London and the south-east with the Olympic project and infrastructure projects like Cross Rail and ThamesLink can offset the demand for private housing in particular," Gerwyn Davies, public policy advisor noted.
Figures from the national House Building Council showed a huge decrease in demand more than 50 per cent less applications were made to start building new homes than 12 months ago.
Cross Rail will create a new network under central London, which links Maidenhead in the west with Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the east.
The prime minister has described the project as "a long-held dream for business and Londoners alike."
