Firms turn to Telematics to save at the pumps

Several companies have begun using Telematics to reduce their fuel costs, a leading provider of the technology has claimed.

By tracking vehicles as they move around the country, the internet–based technology claims to reduce fuel bills and improve efficiency.

"This technology can offer immediate cost reductions - our customers are noticing significant savings within the first three months of implementation," claimed John Wisdom, marketing director at Cybit, a provider of the system.

Fleet vehicles are fitted with small units that transmit information to its data centre and can be monitored by GPS technology in real-time.

Rising fuel prices are causing problems for firms that hire workers in construction jobs – for smaller companies transport can account for a large part of their budget.

Builders are facing a downturn in house construction, despite reassurance from the government it wants to build thousands of new affordable homes.
