Union boss backs Brown amid strike calls

14/08/2008

Boss of public sector union Unison has given his backing to Gordon Brown as transport workers prepare for industrial action.

Dave Prentis said unions' real concerns were centred on policy, not leadership.

His comments followed reports that unions were prepared to back health secretary Alan Johnson and former deputy leadership candidate Jon Cruddas.

Mr Prentis told Personnel Today: "I don't believe there is a risk of unions withdrawing support for Brown."

"I have a very strong belief that as a general secretary, it's not my role to seek to change the leader of the party or the prime minister, and I can assure you we are not seeking a change in leadership."

Tube workers have announced they are planning to continue industrial action, a move certain to restrict travel in London.
