Women less confident when negotiating salaries
22/08/2008
When it comes to asking for a pay rise, females are shyer and less aggressive than their male co-workers, experts have claimed.
According to the British Association of Women Entrepreneurs (BAWE) women are rarely better than men at negotiating their salaries.
Tanya Hine, president of the BAWE added that in industries such as construction, men tend to earn much larger amounts.
Speaking about higher salaries for men, Ms Hine said: "Take the banking sector or the construction sector [for example].
"In the big corporates it is very difficult
In the big corporates I think we have quite a few years to go."
Discussing figures from the Fawcett Society which show a 17 per cent salary difference between male and female workers Ms Hine suggested that this is partly due to "tradition" and women taking maternity leave.
The Fawcett Society research also found that just 11 per cent of directors of the UK's top 100 companies are women.
