22/08/2008

Those looking for jobs in the UK construction sector may be interested to learn that DP World has been awarded a £400 million contract to construct part of a container port at London Gateway.

According to Your Shipbuilding News, the initial phase of the project is expected to be completed over the next five years and will involve the construction of three berths.

The entire project is expected to generate over 12,000 jobs and is one of the largest ever investments in south-east England.

Commenting on the news, London Gateway chief executive Simon Moore said: "This contract is a major milestone in constructing the port. In an economic climate where the building industry is experiencing a sharp slow down, this is great news for Essex and the UK in general."

Mr Moore added that the project was "vitally important" for the British economy.

London Gateway will be situated near Thurrock in Essex.
