Government initiative gets people back into construction jobs
29/09/2008
A government employment scheme will give unemployed workers the chance to get jobs in the construction industry, reports Contract Journal.
The Energy Efficiency Employment Initiative will aim to offer out-of-work people, who have failed to find employment within six months of losing their last job, the chance to get jobs insulating homes and businesses by Christmas.
Government departments are to work with energy companies to encourage them to take part in employment partnerships to find positions for people made redundant from their previous careers.
Stephen Timms, work and pensions minister, told the publication: "Homeowners want to insulate their properties so they can cut down on the amount of energy they waste, saving on their bills and the construction industry wants workers who can help them meet that requirement."
Skills secretary John Denham told Contract Journal that the minimum weekly wage for construction apprentices seeking jobs will be raised by £15 to £95 in a bid to generate more interest in construction job vacancies.
