Construction jobs created by Tyne Tunnel

30/10/2008

Thousands of jobs in construction have been created by the building of the second Tyne Tunnel.

Work has now kicked off on the massive £260 million project which will link north and south Tyneside.

Once the tunnel has been completed, even more job opportunities are expected to arise as the link will encourage regeneration in the surrounding areas.

North Tyneside Mayor John Harrison said that he expected the tunnel to "deliver real benefits for businesses" and added that it had already encouraged landownes to bring forward expansion plans.

Local MP Stephen Hepburn, added: "This much-needed project will provide a tremendous boost.

"Not only will it create jobs, which is vitally important at a time of global financial instability, but the project ensures that local people and businesses will benefit from the improved transport links."

Earlier this month, jobs were being advertised at Tyneside's Whitley Bay Leisure Pool which is set to re-open in February following a revamp, according to the News Guardian.ADNFCR-1196-ID-18850801-ADNFCR
