Govt gives schools program go-ahead
13/11/2008
The government has given the go-ahead for a rebuilding program to help improve the UK's schools.
The announcement is good news for workers looking for construction jobs, which have been hit recently by the global economic slowdown.
By agreeing the Primary Capital Programme, the government has helped some 1,500 rebuilding and refurbishment initiatives get started across 133 local authorities.
"Schools are now being revolutionised by the biggest, sustained capital investment for 50 years benefiting every single primary, secondary, academy and special school in England," said secretary of state for children, Ed Balls.
He described the move as a once-in-a-lifetime chance to transform primary education across the UK.
The Department for Children, Schools and Families has said it will offer advice to 15 more local authorities so they can get their proposals ready.
Construction jobs have been hit hard by lessening confidence in both residential and commercial property markets.
