Boris approves Wharf construction plans
14/11/2008
Boris Johnson has approved plans for new offices, a Crossrail station and a new hotel in Canary Wharf.
The mayor of London has announced he is determined to minimise the impact the current economic climate is having.
"We cannot stop building in our city and just as we will forge ahead with our huge house building programme, we must ensure the development process for all construction projects is as smooth and speedy as possible," he said.
By agreeing to the plans - designed by Richard Rogers, Foster and Partners, and Patel Taylor - he has increased the possibility new construction jobs will be created.
Even so, the capital is already busy with preparations for the 2012 Olympics, with infrastructure across London benefiting from increased funding.
Mr Johnson hopes construction of the new station in Canary Wharf will act "as the catalyst for the construction of more offices and the other facilities including new shops and more hotels, creating lasting jobs over the coming decade".
