Chancellor will announce 10,000 construction jobs
24/11/2008
Chancellor Alistair Darling is set to announce 10,000 new construction jobs as part of his pre-budget announcement, the Guardian has reported.
By accelerating its capital spending the government hope to get thousands of UK homes better insulated this winter and generate thousands of new jobs.
Insulation specialist SIG has only recently announced it is to lay off 900 workers because of weakening demand for property.
It said the restructuring plan devised to help the company would "not be without consequence for SIG's markets and customers".
Mr Darling is also set to reveal Value Added Tax will be cut, lowering the cost of goods in the high street and encouraging consumers to spend more.
According to the government, turning down heating, good insulation and efficient boilers can all help reduce the cost of insulating homes.
By following its guidelines, it claims households can save up to £300 per year.
