CIC: Still lots of construction work available

CIC: Still lots of construction work available The Construction Industry Council (CIC) has said the building sector still has lots of work available.

Its chief executive said the certainty of some projects, such as development work on the Olympic sites and London's Crossrail, meant opportunities still exist.

"If you're working on motorway construction, railway projects or underground projects [then] there are a lot of projects still going on and the government and local authorities are spending quite a lot of money in these areas," Graham Watts noted.

He said the recession was unique – previously, major construction projects were cut, whereas this time investment was still coming through.

Not all companies are going into recession, although the house building sector had clearly been hit hard by the economic downturn, he observed.

"It is certainly a more patchy situation than we've had before," Mr Watts said.

He was keen to note there was still "quite a lot of work around if you are working in the right sectors".

Labour Market Statistics showed that in December the number of vacancies was 562,000, down 49,000 on the previous quarter.
